Events
Our goal as the CLA Student board is to better the relationship with the students, faculty, and administration of the College of Liberal Arts. The primary way of achieving this goal is to sponsor and/or run events that engage CLA students with their University and provide a specific resource that relates to the College of Liberal Arts. Here is a list of the events, what we do and they are categorized by which committee of the CLASB runs the event.
Academic:
- Meet, Greet, and Eat- This event opens the door for any student in the college to come with their concerns, questions, comments, and ideas. We facilitate an open forum for students to present and discuss this material. We gather the notes from the meeting and present is to the dean and other faculty. A plan is made to address and change where applicable what the students feel is important. Plus, it’s a Meet, Greet, and EAT! There will be some yummy food provided for free for those who come to participate.
- Dean’s Luncheon-The Dean’s Lunch is an opportunity for board members to sit down with the Dean James Parente and some of his colleagues to present the notes and recommendations from the previous Meet, Greet and Eat. We are able to pass solutions and new ideas back and forth that are geared towards improving the overall experience for students.
Internal:
- CLASB Scholarship Award Banquet- Each year, the CLA Student Board awards 4 applicants a $500 scholarship. The winners must be full-time sophomores, juniors, or seniors. At the end of the semester, a small awards reception is held for the winners and their families to come join.
- Philanthropy Events-The Student Board members choose a few activities each semester to participate in as a group. We feel it is part of our duty as members of this community to give back in some way. Some past events have been participating in Relay for Life hosted by the American Cancer Society, volunteering at Students against hunger, volunteering at Commencement, and many more activities.
External:
- Major Fair-This is one of our most popular events! It is a great representation of all the majors and minors in the college of liberal arts. It gives students an opportunity to come learn about many options they have to learn in CLA and speak with advisors about what a specific major or department has to offer. There is always fun giveaways and much to learn!
- Art Fair- The Art fair is one of our most fun, and longest running events, It is almost entirely put on by the student artists who bring in their artwork and compete for prizes. Many of the artists’ work has been published in other mediums and many have gone on to have successful careers as artists.
- Food For Thought-Each semester, the external committee hosts 2-3 Food For Thought events, in which students are welcomed to invite a professor, faculty member, or TA for dinner, ON US! This event gives students the chance to engage with their instructors outside of the classroom setting. Every time, we have an abundance of students who wish to take advantage of this opportunity so we advice everyone to get a spot fast! Past venues for the Food for Thoughts have been Chipotle, Noodles and Company, Pot Belly’s, and the Loring Pasta Bar.
- Concert on the Mall-This is our newest event that was inspirited and started by a couple board members themselves. It is a student talent show that is put on in the spring. The participants are all students who wish to entertain their peers and have some fun! There have been singers and dancers of many types of music, all with great talent. It’s free food and live entertainment!
